Youth in Government is Belfast YMCA's political education and good relations youth project which works with 30 young people aged 16-18 from around Belfast. This year's group comprises young people from 18 different secondary schools and colleges who meet weekly over five months to learn about each other, as well as the emerging political issues on a local, national and global level.
The group recently braved the elements and narrowly avoided Storm Bert during an insightful visit to Derry/Londonderry. The purpose of this trip was to learn about different perspectives on our shared history. One of the first stops on our journey was the city's iconic walls, which have stood since the 17th century. Walking along these well-preserved fortifications provided a glimpse into the Siege of Derry. We spent some time with the Apprentice Boys' of Derry and learned about their culture, history and practices.
We then took a stop in the Bogside, where we explored the history of Bloody Sunday. Visiting the Museum of Free Derry and meeting with relatives of those who lost their lives in this event. The experience was both emotional and educational, highlighting the importance of remembering the past while striving for a better future. A lighter moment came with our visit to the famous Derry Girls Mural. The group took plenty of photos in front of the mural, celebrating the show’s role in bringing humour and heart to the story of the city.
Our trip to the city was enhanced with some group discussions and debates in which the group shared their views on the key lessons from our visit. Overall, the trip was a remarkable opportunity to immerse ourselves in the history, culture, and identity of Derry/Londonderry. It was a weekend of learning, reflection, and friendship which the participants will remember.
