The programme of events for this year’s Good Relations Week is officially launched today.
Coordinated by the Community Relations Council (CRC), the week will feature over 200 events across all council areas between September 16 and 22 with support from The Executive Office, the Department for Communities, the Department of Justice and other government agencies.
Under the theme “People Making Change for Peace”, events will cover issues including cultural diversity, dealing with the past, faith, sport, education, young people and language.
Organisers include community and voluntary organisations, local councils, Libraries NI, National Museums Northern Ireland, the Education Authority, Belfast Health & Social Care Trust, and many others.
Community Relations Council Chair, Martin McDonald, said:
This year we have selected the theme ‘People Making Change for Peace’ as we seek to showcase the contribution many thousands of people make to creating and sustaining good relationships across the community.
We are delighted to have such a packed programme of over 200 events which showcase the fantastic work and the people behind it that is so important to our society.
I encourage everyone to get involved in Good Relations Week and to seek to play their own role in making positive change for peace."
During Good Relations Week the Belfast-based organisation, Springboard will hold a ‘People 4 Peace’ event, when young people ages 16-24 from the Greater Belfast Area will hear from inspirational speakers from a variety of community backgrounds, cultures and ethnicities and hold an interactive discussion around diversity, respect and mutual understanding.
Other events across the region include a refugee awareness day at the Tommy Makem Arts & Community Centre in Keady; “Playing Together and Apart”, an event at the National Football Stadium at Windsor Park; a Troubles art display at Enniskillen Castle; and living history performances at First Derry Presbyterian Church to mark the Walled City 400.
This year, the fabulous Culture Night on 20 September will be part of Good Relations Week again, and will also become a weekend, with Culture Day taking place on Saturday the 21 - which is also the International Day of Peace.
