Turas, the Irish language project in east Belfast, is proud to announce the opening of an extensive new library and learning space. It opens September 16 2019. It is also unveiling a bursary scheme for its higher level learners.

Turas is core funded by the Community Relations Council.

Turas is sited in the Skainos building, 241 Newtownards Road. The new library collection amounts to almost 2,000 books, plus digital resources.

The bespoke study area provides learning space and computer facilities for the growing number of Irish language students that have enrolled at Turas.

Turas is also sending eight of its learners to university via its new bursary scheme. This is another important aspect of the Turas vision – to support its students into third level education and increase diversity at a high level in the Irish language sector.

More than 700 learners have already passed through Turas, which began in 2011. An estimated 300 learners will enroll in September's intake of 14 classes.

The library collection is the result of donations from individuals and language groups. Turas has also used its existing funds to enhance the collection.

All of the Turas learners have access to the books, recorded on a searchable database. Categories include Technology, History, Religion and Social Sciences.

Linda Ervine, Development Officer at Turas says:  “When I look around this wonderful collection of Irish language books and resources it is hard to believe that it all began with a few books on a shelf.  It is a very valuable development in our project and comes at a time when a number of our learners are undertaking third level study and raising their expectations.”

The library project has been funded by the Department of Communities, Urban Villages and Ciste Infheistíochta na Gaeilge, the Irish Investment Fund. The bursaries have made possible by Urban Villages, Lisair Ltd, Conradh na Gaeilge the Irish News and a number of other well-wishers.
